Report of the 2nd ASEAN-ILSI Training Workshop on Safety and Risk Assessment of Agriculture-Related GMOs


The 2nd ASEAN-ILSI Training Workshop on Safety and Risk Assessment of Agriculture-Related GMOs was held from August 20-22, 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The purpose of the workshop is to share Australia’s, Canada’s, and Japan’s experiences in the regulation and safety assessment of genetically modified (GM) foods based on international developments in GM foods by Codex, FAO/WHO and OECD. The highlight of the workshop was the presentation of a case study to provide a hands-on exercise in the food safety assessment of a GM soybean variety and also to present environmental considerations for the safety assessment of GM plants.

This workshop was organized by ILSI Southeast Asia Region and the Ministry of Agriculture, Malaysia, with support of ASEAN, and in collaboration with Health Canada (HC) and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
