As part of the ongoing regional initiatives to strengthen science-based food safety in Southeast Asia, this workshop, co-organized by International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF) and South-East Asia Food and Agricultural Science and Technology (SEAFAST), IPB University, Indonesia, featured global and regional food safety experts who reviewed key issues in food safety and the application of MRA in science-based food safety management. It also offers a platform for scientific exchange among regulators, researchers, and stakeholders, highlighting the current efforts on harmonization and substantiation of claims.

Mrs. Boon Yee Yeong, Executive Director, ILSI Southeast Asia Region, Singapore

Mrs. Boon Yee Yeong  is the Executive Director of ILSI SEA Region, based in Singapore. ILSI SEA Region was established as a regional branch of the world-wide scientific-foundation ILSI in 1993, covering ASEAN and Australasia. Mrs. Yeong oversees the Branch's operation, scientific programs and partnership activities, working closely with stakeholders from private sectors, leading academic institutions, international organizations and key government and health agencies throughout the vast geographical region. ILSI SEA Region facilitates programs that address pertinent nutrition, food safety and sustainability topics as well as issues for the improvement scientific decision for public health benefits.

Mrs. Yeong obtained her BSc and Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics from Kings College (previously Queen Elizabeth College) University of London, and has over the past decades actively served to build scientific capacity and nutrition improvement for the target population in the region.

Dr. E-Siong Tee, Immediate Past President, Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), Malaysia

Dr E Siong Tee is the Chair of the Southeast Asia Public Health Nutrition Network which comprised the Nutrition Societies of five key SE Asia Countries. He is currently a Nutrition Consultant for TES NutriHealth Strategic Consultancy. Dr. Tee was Head of the Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Nutrition Research Centre of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, until his retirement in February 2002, after serving for 30 years. He was President of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM) till March 2024. In this capacity, he has led the implementation of various community nutrition promotion programs including the Nutrition Month Malaysia program since 2002. He is also Vice-President of the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS). Dr Tee is a member of several Technical Working Groups of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, including the committees related to Malaysian Food Regulations and Codex Alimentarius. He initiated the formation of the Southeast Asia Public Health Nutrition (SEA-PHN) Network in 2014 and is the current Chairman of the Network. Dr Tee is also Adjunct Professor of the International Medical University, Malaysia.

Dr E Siong Tee has been a Member of the Board of Directors of ILSI SEA Region since 1996 and Scientific Coordinator of ILSI Malaysia Country Committee since 2005.

Updates on Nutrition Labeling and Claims Regulations in Southeast Asia and China Expand

Dr Ernina Rani, Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health, Brunei Darussalam Dr Ernina Nisdzarinah Haji Abdul Rani is the Strategic Lead for Nutrition Policy and Programmes at the Health Promotion Centre and holds Deputy Chair for Obesity Taskforce at the Ministry of Health, Brunei Darussalam. She has led and contributed to national strategies and policies addressing noncommunicable disease prevention, health promotion, and public health advocacy - including the National Strategy for Salt Reduction Strategy and developing MOH Strategy for Obesity Prevention and Management.
She also serves as Secretariat for the Multisectoral Taskforce on Health and as a technical working group member of the Cross-Functional Team for Improving Brunei's Food Environment. At the regional level, Dr Ernina is the ASEAN Health Cluster 1 Country Coordinator and Focal Point for Health Priority 7 on Promotion of Good Nutrition and Healthy Diet for Brunei Darussalam. Her work reflects a commitment to evidence-based policy, multi-sectoral collaboration, and creating supportive environments for healthier communities. Indonesia
Ms Sofhiani Dewi, STP, M.Si, National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), Indonesia

Ms Sofhiani Dewi, STP., M.Si. is the Team Leader for the Standardization and Assessment of Certain Food Products, Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Claims, and Nutrition Labelling at the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM). She holds a Bachelor's degree in Food Technology and Nutrition and a Master's degree in Food Science from Institut Pertanian Bogor. Since joining BPOM in 2006, she has held various leadership roles, including Head of Section for Standardization of Genetically Engineered and Irradiated Foods and Head of Section for Standardization of Certain Food Products.

Malaysia
Ms Norazlinda binti Zainal Abidin, FSQP, Ministry of Health, Malaysia Norazlinda Binti Zainal Abidin is a Senior Assistant Director and Nutritionist with the Food Safety and Quality Programme, Ministry of Health Malaysia. She holds a degree in Nutrition and Health Community from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Before joining the Food Safety and Quality Programme, she served as a Nutritionist with Klinik Kesihatan Dalat, Sarawak, where she gained valuable experience in community nutrition and public health services.
Her current portfolio centres on the development of food safety standards mostly related to nutrition, including drafting national interventions for the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) and aligning Malaysia's legislation with Codex standards. She is also actively engaged in ASEAN-level initiatives, contributing as part of the Secretariat of the ASEAN Committee on Harmonisation of Prepared Foodstuff Standards (ACHFPS). In addition, she is involved in the formulation of policies on nutrition labelling and nutrition claims.
Myanmar
Dr Pyei Phyo, Food Control Section, Department of Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health, Myanmar

Dr. Pyei Phyo holds a Master's degree in Public Health and currently serves as Director of the Food Control Section, Department of Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health, Myanmar. He previously worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Medicine for 7 years, Assistant Director at the Department of Medical Science for 3 years, and Regional Food and Drug Control Officer in Ayeyarwady Region for 7 years.

In addition, Dr. Pyei Phyo has worked as a freelance biostatistician, providing statistical expertise for 13 Master's theses and three Doctoral dissertations in biomedical and food safety fields. His research portfolio includes 3 publications as Principal Investigator, 4 publications and 1 conference poster as Co-Investigator.

Updates on Nutrition Labeling and Claims Regulations in Southeast Asia and China (Cont'd) Expand Philippines
Ms Givinia Tuason, Center for Food Regulation and Research, Food and Drug Administration, Philippines

Ms. Givinia Tuason is a Senior Evaluator holding the position of Food-Drug Regulation Officer III at the Licensing and Registration Division, Center for Food Regulation and Research, Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ms. Tuason has been with the Philippine FDA for 11 years. She is responsible for quality assurance of evaluation of applications for product registration to secure Certificate of Product Registration, a market authorization document required prior to importation, distribution, sale of processed pre-packaged food products in the Philippines. In addition, Ms. Tuason is also a technical expert in the evaluation of product registration requirements and procedures and labeling requirements of pre-packaged processed food products including food supplement.

In the past, she worked as an Administrative Dietitian in a reputable hospital and served as a Nutritionist -Dietitian II under the Urban Health and Nutrition Project of the Department of Health. Ms. Tuason also joined the Updating National Survey on the Nutritional Status of Filipinos under the Food and Nutrition Research Institute - Department of Science and Technology. She graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

Singapore
Ms Priscilla Li, Health Promotion Board (HPB), Singapore Ms. Priscilla Li works within the Policy and Strategy Development team in HPB. She leads pieces relating to Nutri-Grade and sugar reduction, maternal and child health, as well as food labelling and claims.
She is an accredited practicing dietitian and a certified nutrition support specialist. She received the Ministry of Health - Healthcare Manpower Development Award and obtained fellowship at Cambridge University Hospital and St Georges' Hospital in the UK.

 

Thailand
Dr. Kotchaphon Manoonphol, Food Division Food and Drug Administration, Thailand

Dr.Kotchaphon Manoonphol is the Deputy Director of Food Division at Thai Food and Drug Administration. With over 25 years of experience in the food regulatory, she specialized in the field of nutrition. With this extensive experience in the regulatory, she has been responsible for analyzing, planning and developing policies for food security and safety as well as promoting nutrition awareness with consumers and business operators by fostering collaboration among stakeholders throughout the food chain. She is passionate about nutrition and functional food and has been involved in promoting health-conscious society by matching the interest of regulators, consumers and businesses.

Vietnam

Dr Tran Khanh Van, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Vietnam

Dr. Tran Khanh Van is Head of the Micronutrient Department at the National Institute of Nutrition. Dr. Van served as a focal point for food fortification programs and the SBN network (Scaling Up Nutrition Business network). During her professional career of more than 30 years, she has been involved in numerous research and community educational projects focusing on nutrition communication and education, micronutrient deficiency, food fortification, and nutrition labelling emphasizing information on overweight and obesity control. She is also a member of the core group to develop important nutritional policies such as National Strategies for Nutrition and the National Plan of Action for Nutrition, nutrition labelling, Nutrition reference intakes. Dr. Van received her M.D. in Hanoi Medical School and completed her M.S. in Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, USA. Dr Dong Liang, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, China

Dr. Dong Liang is a medical doctor and Associate Research Fellow at the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA), where she serves as Deputy Director of the Division of Applied Nutrition I. Her research focuses on the development, implementation, and international coordination of food standards, with a particular emphasis on nutrition labeling, infant formula, and foods for special dietary uses.

She has played a key role in drafting and revising national food safety standards, including those related to infant formula and foods for special medical purposes. Dr. Liang also contributes to the development of Codex Alimentarius standards and actively supports the implementation of China's national nutrition strategies, such as the Healthy China Initiative (2017-2030).

Dr. Liang has led or participated in numerous national and international research projects and has authored over 50 scientific publications. Her work aims to strengthen the regulatory framework for food labeling and improve the safety and nutritional quality of specialized food products. She has received multiple national awards recognizing her contributions to food safety and nutrition science.

Ms. Norlida Zulkafly is a Nutritionist and currently appointed as the Section Head, for Special Food Group Section in the Food Safety and Quality Programme, Ministry of Health. She obtained her degree in Food Science and Nutrition from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2002. She began her career as nutritionist in a pharmaceutical and health industry for three years before joining Ministry of Health as Nutritionist in 2005.

Ms. Norlida has been involved with several expert committees namely Expert Committee on Nutrition, Health Claims & Advertisement and Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU). Her field of interest includes nutrition labelling and food standards development.

ILSI SEA Region is headquartered in Singapore and covers the 10 ASEAN countries, Australia and New Zealand. Ms Tan Yen Nee is a Nutritionist at the Ministry of Health Malaysia, currently serving with the Nutrition Division. She has nearly a decade of experience in the Industry Collaboration Sector, working closely with stakeholders from government, academia, and the food industry to advance national nutrition initiatives.

Her professional portfolio focuses on nutrition labelling and nutrient profiling as key policy tools to shape healthier food environments. Since 2015, she has played a key role in the preparation, implementation, and promotion of the Healthier Choice Logo (HCL) in Malaysia, which encourages product reformulation and guides consumers towards healthier choices. More recently, she has been actively involved in Malaysia's adaptation of the Nutri-Grade labelling system, ensuring alignment with regional best practices and supporting consumer empowerment through transparent labelling.

In addition, she contributes to initiatives addressing unhealthy food marketing to children, collaborating with stakeholders across government, academia, industry, and international organizations, including the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific in Manila and WHO Europe, to strengthen food environment policies in Malaysia. Dr. Kanga Rani Selvaduray obtained her PhD in Medical Health Sciences from the International Medical University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2011. She is currently the Head of Nutrition Unit at the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). Dr. Selvaduray started her career at MPOB as a scientist studying the effects of palm oil and its phytonutrients in nutrition and health and her research team has a number of patents and several publications especially in the field of tocotrienols and breast cancer research. She then led the Lipid Nutrition Group focusing on lipid research before being appointed as the Head of the Nutrition Unit. She was awarded the Gold Medal for excellence in research by MPOB in 2001 and won the ITEX Gold Medal Award in 2006, 2015 and 2016, in addition to several awards for Best Publications by MPOB.
Dr. Kanga is actively involved in several National Regulatory and CODEX Committees as well as a Member of the Expert Working Committee for Food, Health Claims and Advertising under the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. She also has served as a member of the Scientific Committee of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) from 2022 to 2024.

ILSI SEA Region and FAO pioneered the first regional initiative from 1997 to 2003 to support the harmonization of recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) across 10 Southeast Asian countries, resulting in key publications that served as working and reference documents for national guideline development. Aside from that, ILSI SEA Region has also regularly facilitated regional discussions and updates on nutrient profiling, food labelling and Healthier Choice Logo to promote healthier eating patterns. A recent review by the SEA Public Health Nutrition Network (SEA-PHN) analyzed nutrient recommendations in five member countries, revealing a reliance on international guidelines due to limited local data.

In response to emerging global efforts for harmonized nutrient intake values (NIVs), ILSI SEA Region reconvened its Nutrient Recommendations Working Group (NRWG) to review, discuss and establish consensus on a harmonized, science-based approach to recommended nutrients intake for SEA. This initiative supports the development of robust nutrient profiling systems (NPS), now increasingly aided by modern technologies capable of assessing the nutritional quality of meals and informing public health strategies. This session aims to share and update ongoing efforts in nutrient recommendations and meal-based nutrient profiling in Southeast Asia.

Dr E Siong Tee is the Chair of the Southeast Asia Public Health Nutrition Network which comprised the Nutrition Societies of five key SE Asia Countries. He is currently a Nutrition Consultant for TES NutriHealth Strategic Consultancy. Dr. Tee was Head of the Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Nutrition Research Centre of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, until his retirement in February 2002, after serving for 30 years. He was President of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM) till March 2024. In this capacity, he has led the implementation of various community nutrition promotion programs including the Nutrition Month Malaysia program since 2002. He is also Vice-President of the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS). Dr Tee is a member of several Technical Working Groups of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, including the committees related to Malaysian Food Regulations and Codex Alimentarius. He initiated the formation of the Southeast Asia Public Health Nutrition (SEA-PHN) Network in 2014 and is the current Chairman of the Network. Dr Tee is also Adjunct Professor of the International Medical University, Malaysia.

Assoc Prof Dr Emorn Udomkesmalee is the Senior Advisor and Former Director of the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Thailand. She holds a current position of Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of International Health, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, USA.

Internationally, she's the former Board Chair of IFPRI; former Member of the Board of Directors of the Micronutrient Forum, as well as Sight and Life Foundation Board of Trustees. She currently serves on various international positions: Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications (SAGNA)- International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); Paris Peace Forum-Independent Expert Panel- Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G) 2025; Country Working Group of the Standing Together for Nutrition (ST4N) Consortium; Technical Advisory Group for Global Anemia Exemplars; Scientific Committee of Agriculture, Nutrition and Health (ANH) Academy; International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Global Board; Vanguard Committee of ILSI's project on Applications of Globally Harmonized Nutrients, Co-Chair Nutrient Recommendations Working Group, and Scientific Director of ILSI Southeast Asia Region.

Dr. Wantanee Kriengsinyos is an Associate Professor in the Human Nutrition Unit at the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU). A distinguished Thai nutrition scientist and registered dietitian, Dr. Kriengsinyos has extensive experiences in various domains of nutrition and dietetics research. She has served as the Director of the Master's Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (International Program) and as Deputy Director for Research at INMU. Currently, she is an active committee member of the Master's Program at INMU and contributes to multiple health-related organizations, including the Thai Dietetic Association, the Diabetes Association of Thailand, and the Nutrition Association of Thailand.

Her current research is focusing on the development of the "Healthier Choice" nutrition symbol, a simplified nutrient labeling system designed to guide consumers toward food products with reduced sugar, fat, and sodium content. This initiative also aims to motivate food manufacturers to reformulate their products for healthier options. Additionally, she conducts research studies utilizing stable isotope techniques to evaluate energy expenditure and metabolism in both children and adults, and evaluate protein quality. Furthermore, she has led numerous clinical trials investigating the metabolic effects of consuming specific foods, such as coconut milk and Thai fruits, on blood glucose and cholesterol levels in Thai adults. She earned her Ph.D. in Nutritional Science, alongside her dietetic training, from the University of Toronto, Canada. She worked as Researcher at the Division of Maternal and Child Nutrition, National Institute of Health and Nutrition in Shinjuku, Tokyo from September 1994 to March 2005 and as a Senior Researcher at the Department of Health Promotion Research, National Institute of Public Health in Saitama, Japan from April 2005 to March 2012. Dr. Takimoto is also a member of the Japanese Society of Nutrition and Dietetics, Japanese Society of Public Health, Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and American Society of Nutrition. Mr. Geoffry Smith is President of ILSI Southeast Asia Region based in Singapore, and a Representative of the branch to the ILSI Global Assembly. He is also the Chairman of the Essential Micronutrients Foundation, a non-profit organization which addresses micronutrient deficiencies globally as a public health issue. In addition, he is Director of Nutrition Strategies International which deals with food and nutrition issues in developing countries. Mr. Smith serves as a member of the editorial board of the journal Food and Nutrition Bulletin. Prior to his current positions, Mr. Smith was the Global Director, Health Chelates for Akzo Nobel Functional Chemicals, and directed the global business for these compounds in food and nutrition as well as pharmaceutical applications. He was responsible for the global project within Akzo Nobel addressing iron deficiency anemia.

A/Prof Lim Wee Shiong is the Director at IGA, and Senior Consultant at the Department of Geriatric Medicine, TTSH. He is Associate Professor (Clinical Practice) at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU; Adjunct Associate Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS; Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society; and Associate Fellow of the Association for Medical Education in Europe. A/Prof Lim's comprehensive track record of scholarly work as a "Geriatrician-Educator-Researcher" included over 200 peer-reviewed publications; Associate Editor of Journal of Frailty and Aging; involvement in international and national workgroups in sarcopenia and frailty (AWGS, AWGC, APGN, GLIS, and WHO peer review group for Sarcopenia Package); and research and teaching awards in Geriatric Medicine and Health Professions Education. A firm advocate of Pasteur-quadrant use-inspired research, his research work spans the areas of sarcopenia and related disorders; multi-dimensional frailty; healthy ageing and intrinsic capacity; dementia and cognitive disorders; caregiving; and evidence-based medicine in the older person.

Prof Jeyakumar Henry is Consultant, Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW), NUS Medicine, Singapore. He also serves on the ILSI SEA Region Board of Directors, International Medical College (Malaysia) Board of Governors, and Advisory Board member of Monell Chemical Centre, USA. He is currently a member of the IUFoST Task force on Food Processing for Nutrition, Diet and Health.

Prof Henry was founding Director of the Clinical Nutrition Research Centre, A*STAR, Singapore (2011-2023) and the Functional Food Centre in Oxford, UK. He has made a substantial contribution in melting food science and nutrition in this region and globally. Prof Henry was Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Food Science of Nutrition and Advances in Food and Nutrition Research. He has published over 400 papers (H index 70) and delivered over 440 international lectures. He was a Board member of UK Food Standards Agency, and served as a consultant to UNICEF, FAO, WHO on International Nutrition.

In 2010, Prof Henry was awarded the British Nutrition Foundation prize for his outstanding contribution to Food and Nutrition. He was made a Fellow of the International Academy of Food Scientists and Technologists (2012). Prof Henry was recipient of the Institute of Food Technologists (USA) - W.K. Kellogg International Food Security Award & Lectureship 2019 and the prestigious Niigata International Food Award 2018 known as "Asian World Food Prize". In 2024, he was made a Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition - the highest award in Human Nutritional Science. Trained initially as a Food Scientist, he obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK.

Prof Tsai is a distinguished professor at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan, specializing in psychobiotics and the gut-brain axis.
Prof Tsai is known for his work on how gut bacteria can influence mental health and has identified a strain of psychobiotics, Lactobacillus plantarum PS128, that shows promise in improving dopamine levels and potentially reducing stress and depression-like behaviors. Prof Tsai clinical research on the microbiome showed potential to address and improve mental health conditions such as depression, Parkinson's diseases for the elderly and autism spectrum in the younger age group. He is currently involved in several biotechnology companies, including Bened Biomedical.

Professor Halliwell graduated from Oxford University with BA (first class honours) and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. He is one of the world's most highly-cited researchers in Neurobiology & Behaviour, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, and his Hirsch Index is 174 (Scopus, Jun 2025). His book Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine (Oxford University Press), now in its fifth edition, is regarded worldwide as an authoritative text of the field, being cited above 36820 times (Google Scholar, Jun 2025). He was honoured as a Citation Laureate (2021) for pioneering research in free-radical chemistry including the role of free radicals and antioxidants in human disease. This distinction is awarded by Clarivate to researchers whose work is deemed to be of "Nobel Class", among the most influential in their fields. He was one of 16 scientists (only three in Chemistry) listed in the 2021 Hall of Citation Laureates.

He has received numerous awards including the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2010 for contributions to Singapore, the President's Science and Technology Medal 2013 "for distinguished sustained and exceptional contributions to Singapore's Science and Engineering landscape", and the NUS University Award (Outstanding Service) in 2023.

His research focuses on the role of free radicals and antioxidants in ageing and age-related human diseases.

Prof Fielding is a Senior Scientist in the Metabolism & Basic Biology of Aging directive at the HNRCA. He is also Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Associate Director of the Boston Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center.

Dr. Fielding is an internationally known researcher who studies the underlying mechanisms contributing to the age-associated decline in skeletal muscle mass, the resultant impact on function, and the potential role of exercise, nutrition, physical activity and other therapies on attenuating this process. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers with over 8,000 citations and has conducted numerous cross sectional, longitudinal, and intervention studies examining the role of skeletal muscle power on physical performance in older adults.

Dr. Fielding is an associate editor of the Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, Calcified Tissues International, and Musculoskeletal Research. He has also served as a reviewer on numerous NIH study sections and was elected to the NIH/CSR College of Reviewers. In 2015, he received the Olof Johnell Science Award from the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

He currently leads the ILSI US and Canada Research project on Aging and Sarcopenia.

amas Fulop, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics, and Senior Researcher at the Research Center on Aging, University of Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada. He is the deputy director of the Research Center on Aging and member of the Graduate Immunology Programme. He was the President of the Société Québecoise de Gériatrie from 2007-2012, and has directed the Biology Research Programme of the Research Center on Aging for more than 10 years.

Dr. Fulop's NSERC and CIHR funded research since 1994 is focused on immune response changes in T cells and neutrophils and the mechanism of inflammation with aging and age-related diseases in humans. More specifically his research is directed to the elucidation of the signal transduction changes in immune cells with specific focus on lipid rafts. In Alzheimer disease, he is interested in the elucidation of the pathomechanism leading to amyloid beta deposition. He is studying the vicious circle of the inflammatory process between the periphery and the brain.

Dr. Fulop has authored more than 250 publications. He is recipient of the Presidential Award of the IAGG and fellow of the GSA since 2001. He served on the executive committee for three IAG congresses. He is on several editorial boards such as for Immunity and Aging, European Geriatric Medicine, Journal of frailty and Aging, and Journal of Geriatrics and Palliative Care. He is the editor-in-chief of the Interdisciplinary Topics in Gerontology.

Dr Folop obtained his MD degree at Geneva University. He received his PhD in Biochemistry and Immunology from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was a post-doctoral fellow at University Paris XII in Biochemistry.

Prof Liang-Kung Chen is Professor & Director, Center for Healthy Longevity and Aging Sciences, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei, Taiwan. He is also Superintendent, Taipei Municipal Gan-Dau Hospital (Managed by Taipei Veterans General Hospital), Taiwan, and President of the Asian Association for Frailty and Sarcopenia.

Prof Chen obtained his MD from National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine, and PhD from the Institute of Health Policy and Welfare. After practising orthopedic surgery at Yuan-Shan Veterans Hospital and completing family medicine residency at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, he was Visiting Scholar at Oxford University's Department of Clinical Geratology in 2005.

Prof Chen founded the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia and published the highly influential Asian Consensus for Sarcopenia Diagnosis. Today, he remains a key policy influencer across public health, age-friendly services, social welfare, and long-term care in Taiwan. He has nearly 600 international publications in Gerontology and Geriatrics, and is selected as among the world's top 2% scientists by Scopus and Stanford University, ranking first in Clinical Medicine in Taiwan for 5 consecutive years. Recent awards include the 2020 Morley's Award, 2021 National Award of Innovation, 2022 Ding-Ge Award for Digital Transformation and 2025 Distinguished Researcher of National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan. He currently serves as chief editor of Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics and associate editor of multiple leading journals.

Prof Michael Fenech is founder of Genome Health Foundation, Australia. He is recognised internationally for his research in nutritional genomics and genetic toxicology and for developing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay, which is now a standard method used internationally to measure DNA damage in human and mammalian cells. The lymphocyte CBMN assay has been endorsed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OECD for in vivo radiation bio-dosimetry and in vitro testing of chemical genotoxicity, respectively.

From 1990 to 2018 he worked as a principal research scientist in Australia at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in the field of human nutrition. In 1999-2009 his laboratory further developed the lymphocyte CBMN assay into a 'cytome' assay consisting of six complementary biomarkers of DNA damage and cytotoxicity and, in collaboration with other laboratories, he coordinated the establishment of a similar method for buccal epithelial cells. Both methods are published in Nature Protocols. His key goal is to determine the nutritional, lifestyle and environmental requirements for DNA damage prevention.

Prof Fenech co-founded the HUMN project on micronuclei in human populations in 1997 and the Asia Pacific Nutrigenomics Nutrigenetics Organisation in 2014. Since 2010, he has been an invited speaker at 57 international conferences (10 plenary lectures). His H-index is 88 based on 36,861 total career citations according to Google Scholar.

Prof Woon-Puay KOH is Professor in Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). She received her MBBS (Honours) from NUS, her PhD in immunology from the University of Sydney, Australia, and postdoctoral training in epidemiology from the University of Southern California in USA. Being a population health scientist, Prof Koh's research is in studying the epidemiology of common chronic diseases in the population. She is the Principal Investigator of the Singapore Chinese Health Study, and has co-authored about 500 scientific papers on diet, lifestyle and genes in relation to risk of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. More recently, she has also published on factors that influence important ageing outcomes such as physical frailty, cognitive impairment and aging-related depression. She is regularly listed among the world's top 2% most cited scientists by Stanford University and has received over $35 million dollars in funding from National Institutes of Health (NIH) in USA and the National Medical Research Council in Singapore.

Prof Cuilin Zhang is a professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, founding Director of the Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW) (www.glownus.org), and the Lead for Population Health Study program of Asian Center for Reproductive Longevity and Equity (ACRLE). Prof Zhang holds an Adjunct Professorship at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Before joining NUS, Prof Zhang was a Senior Investigator with tenure and interim Chief of the Epidemiology Branch, Division of Population Health Research, NICHD, National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. She received the Director Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Understanding of Etiology and Risk Factors of Gestational Diabetes, NICHD, NIH.

As a clinical epidemiologist, Prof Zhang's work integrates nutrition, biochemistry, genetics, clinical medicine and public health, and is at the interface of disease etiology and prevention strategies for women and children's health, over lifespan and across generations. She leads a multi-disciplinary research program on the improvement of women's health and human potentials through diet and lifestyle modification, omics research, and early screening. Prof Zhang has led multiple large cohort studies on nutrition, maternal and child health, diabetes and chronic diseases supported by NIH and NUS (> U.S.$80 million as PI or Co-PI). These studies were well-designed for investigating a broad range of health and disease outcomes, and early life precursors of perinatal, pediatric, and adult diseases.

Prof Zhang currently serves on multiple advisory boards such as the Oversight Advisory Committee for the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women's Health Research Network, and the International Advisory Committee for the Chinese National Birth Cohort. She is Associate Editor for Diabetes Care and American Journal of Epidemiology, and serves in the editorial board for Precision Nutrition.

Professor Johan G. Eriksson is full professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, programme lead for the Human Potential Programme at the SOM, deputy executive director and programme director for Human Development at SICS, A*STAR. He is in charge of the daily scientific oversight and planning of the GUSTO and S-PRESTO cohort studies.

Before moving to Singapore professor Eriksson was full professor at the faculty of medicine, University of Helsinki, and chief physician at Helsinki University Central Hospital in Finland. He holds clinical interests in diabetes, obesity and related metabolic diseases. He received his medical degree and specialist qualifications (internal medicine and general practice) from the University of Helsinki.

His research focuses on the early programming of health and disease, as well as on the prevention of gestational diabetes (GDM), type 2 diabetes and related metabolic outcomes by lifestyle interventions. In Finland he is in charge of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, a unique birth cohort study with a follow-up of over 20,000 individuals from birth until the age of over 80 years. Furthermore, he has been involved in the gestational diabetes prevention study RADIEL, in which a lifestyle intervention was shown to successfully reduce GDM and the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study (DPS) - the first randomised study to show that lifestyle intervention is effective in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Professor Angela Wang, MD (UNSW), PhD (HKU) is a Clinical Professor at Duke-National University of Singapore and Senior Consultant at Renal Medicine, Singapore General Hospital. Prof Wang is recognized for her research in peritoneal dialysis (PD), cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health, CKD-mineral bone disease (MBD), and renal nutrition. Her latest research endeavours are in clinical trials and innovations to improve the outcomes of patients with kidney diseases, precision medicine in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic care and preventive kidney medicine.

Prof Wang chairs the First Joint International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) and International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) Practice Recommendations on Nutrition Management in PD Patients (2023-2025). She is also a workgroup member of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) anemia guidelines update in CKD (will be released 2025). Prof Wang is immediate past Councilor of International Society of Nephrology (ISN), and member of ISN Cardio-Renal Roadmap. She held previous appointments such as Past President of International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM), and served in several workgroups such as KDOQI Nutrition Guidelines in CKD 2020, and ISPD Prescribing High Quality Goal-Directed PD Guidelines 2020.

Prof Wang received several prestigious international awards including Thomas Addis Award, a lifetime award of the ISRNM in 2022, and Joel D. Kopple Award from United States National Kidney Foundation in 2018. She has published over 240 papers, 15 book chapters and delivered over 250 invited lectures at international and regional conferences. She serves on the editorial boards of Kidney Int, JASN, CJASN, NDT, Nephron Clinical Practice (Associate Editor), J Renal Nutrition, J Diabetes, etc and was previously Associate Editor of AJKD.

Prof Dr Suzana Shahar is a Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics from the Healthy Aging and Wellness Research Centre, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM); and Honorary Fellow of the Malaysian Dietitians' Association. She is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, UKM. She is the founder of the Centre for Healthy Aging, UKM and the Senior Citizen Centre (PAWE UKM).

Prof Shahar obtained her BSc (Hons) (Dietetics) from UKM and MMed Sci (Human Nutrition) and PhD (Human Nutrition) from the University of Sheffield, UK. Her research interest is on nutrition, wellness and aging. Prof Shahar led a nationwide project on 'Neuroprotective Model for Healthy Longevity among Malaysian Elderly', and currently leads a clinical trial to reverse cognitive frailty among Malaysian older adults under the auspice of the World-Wide FINGERS Trial. Both projects were funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. Prof Shahar also led the Newton Impact Fund Scheme on Developing Salt Reduction Policy for Malaysia. She has filed two formulations for improvement of oxidative stress and cognitive function in aging population, i.e. TP3in1 juice and Cosmos Caudatus powder.

Prof Shahar has published more than 300 publications. She also serves as committee member of several guidelines spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, under the National Coordinating Committee of Food and Nutrition, as well as the International Research Networking on Dementia Prevention, WHO Working Guideline Committee of Risk Reduction of Cognitive Decline, and Consortium on Longitudinal Study on Memory (COSMIC).

Prof Ishikawa-Takata is a Professor in Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences at Toyo University, Japan. She received her PhD in nutritional physiology from Kagawa Nutrition College, Japan, and completed a diploma in sports nutrition from the IOC. She worked as a researcher at the National Institute of Health and Nutrition for about 20 years before she began working at the university. She also participated in establishing the estimated energy requirement for the Dietary Reference Intake, Japan, and measured total energy expenditure using the doubly labeled water method for various age and lifestyle populations. She has also conducted studies related to the national plan for nutritional intervention in the long-term insurance care system. She is currently studying energy and protein metabolism using isotopes and conducting epidemiological studies on nutrition and healthy longevity. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey, Japan, she conducted studies on healthy eating and longevity among the Japanese.

Dr. Kai Lin EK is Head of Scientific and External Affairs APAC for Health, Nutrition & Care at dsm-firmenich. She has a Ph.D. in human nutrition and food science and a Master's in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Sydney, Australia.

At dsm-firmenich, Kai Lin is responsible for providing science-based evidence for the health and nutrition portfolio and leads nutrition research collaborations in APAC. She works closely with the dsm-firmenich global expert team to bring scientific messages into regionally fit health claims and in advancing advocacy needs in Asia-Pacific.

Kai Lin has 18 years of experience in the field of human nutrition, starting as an accredited practicing dietitian in Sydney in primary health care, then as research manager at the Sydney University glycemic index services before moving to Singapore to work in the nutrition industry. She has a good understanding of conducting nutrition research in APAC having spearheaded and led a research grant program which studied nutritional topics relevant for Asian demographics and diets which she is replicating again with the dsm-firmenich Nutrition Research Grant program. She has also previously led a regulatory affairs team in APAC where she used her scientific expertise to help shape regulations in the region and support health claims.

Sheryl started her medical affairs career in GSK Singapore leading key Respiratory, Allergy and HIV portfolios. She then transited to Bayer Consumer Health, taking on various countries, ASEAN, APAC and Global medical affairs roles. Sheryl is currently the Head of Medical & Scientific Affairs for Haleon Wider Asia, the leading consumer health company globally. Sheryl spearheads real world evidence studies, science communication, claims generation and research partnerships in Consumer Health and has published several articles on these topics. She is deeply passionate about research and innovation, and how it can make a positive impact on population health. On a personal note, Sheryl dedicates time to develop future leaders.

Prior to her current role, Dr Tan was Executive Vice-President, Chief Technology Officer of CJ CheilJedang based in S. Korea, during which she played a pivotal role to expand its innovation footprints and transformed R&D into a strategic growth driver of the company's ambition to become a key player in the global food scene. Prof Patricia Conway is Visiting Professor of the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), Singapore and CEO of PC Biome Pte Ltd. She was Professor at the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and in the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Food Technology Centre, NTU. She has extensive research and industry R&D experience, including authorship on over 100 scientific papers in international journals, monographs or book chapters, and numerous plenary or keynote lectures at international meetings. She is inventor on over 20 patent applications and Principal Investigator on grants in Sweden, Australia and Singapore. Prof Conway's research interests are gastrointestinal microbiology, functional foods including probiotics and prebiotics. She has a particular focus on bacterial colonization of the gastrointestinal tract and mechanisms of bacterial adhesion, pathogen inhibition and immune modulation in animals and humans in order to develop ways of modulating the microbiome for health.

Ana San Gabriel is Associate General Manager and Science Communicator at the Global Communications Department of Ajinomoto Co., Inc.

Ana is passionate about guiding consumers toward healthier eating habits-not just by focusing on nutrients, but also by ensuring meals remain delicious. She explores innovative meal- and dish-based nutrient profiling models, advocating for a shift from product-based assessments to promoting food as enjoyable, wholesome meals that people love to eat. Ana's research includes foundational work on umami taste receptors, investigating their roles not only as taste sensors but also as nutrient sensors in the gastric mucosa at the Institute of Ajinomoto Co., Inc.

Ana holds a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a multidisciplinary master's in nutrition from the Human Nutrition and Dairy Animal Science Departments at The Pennsylvania State University, supported by a scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture. As a recipient of a European Union Scholarship, she served as Principal Investigator at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tokyo, before joining Ajinomoto Co., Inc.

Dr Samuel TH Chew is a Senior Consultant with the Geriatric Medicine department at Changi General Hospital (CGH), Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medicine Academic Clinical Program.

He received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1997, his specialist training in internal medicine and geriatric medicine in UK, and is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh and Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

He has a deep passion in delivering evidence-based care for older adults, and has been engaged in clinical teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels on a daily basis for over two decades.

Clinical work includes acute geriatric medicine, geriatric rehabilitation and management of multimorbidity, malnutrition, and sarcopenia in the ambulatory setting.

Dr Chew's current research focus areas are nutrition and muscle health in older adults.

Prof Tsai is known for his work on how gut bacteria can influence mental health and has identified a strain of psychobiotics, Lactobacillus plantarum PS128, that shows promise in improving dopamine levels and potentially reducing stress and depression-like behaviors. Prof Tsai clinical research on the microbiome showed potential to address and improve mental health conditions such as depression, Parkinson's diseases for the elderly and autism spectrum in the younger age group. He is currently involved in several biotechnology companies, including Bened Biomedical.

She also practised as a clinical dietitian in general and acute care hospitals in Singapore, where she provided medical nutrition therapy and dietetic counselling, and was in charge of the weight management clinic. Assoc Prof Jeremy Lim's primary role is as CEO and Co-Founder of AMILI, a microbiome insights company based in Singapore serving the region. Beyond this, he also undertakes academic and practice-focused work in health financing. In previous roles, Jeremy has spent substantial time in public and private healthcare across Asia as well as in policy advisory with Singapore and other regional governments, the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and the World Health Organization. He was founding Partner in NYSE-listed Oliver Wyman's Asia healthcare consulting practice.
Other than AMILI, he is adjunct faculty in the National University of Singapore and Monash University Malaysia.
Outside academia, Jeremy serves on the boards of various for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in different aspects of healthcare including migrant worker health, healthy longevity and digital health interventions. He maintains an active interest in health advisory, supporting former clients, focusing mainly on healthcare acquisitions and health insurance.

Prof Jean Woo is currently Emeritus Professor, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She is also Henry G Leong Research Professor of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and held pivotal role as Director and Co-Director of the following Institutes with CUHK: Director, CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing; Co-Director, CUHK Institute of Health Equity; Director, S.H. Ho Centre for Gerontology and Geriatrics, Faculty of Medicine; and Director, Centre for Nutritional Studies, Faculty of Medicine.

Prof Woo graduated from Cambridge University in 1974. After medical posts in the Charing Cross, Hammersmith, and Brompton Hospitals, she worked in part time posts in general practice as well as research in the University of Hong Kong. She joined the Department of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1985 as Lecturer responsible for the development of the teaching and service in Geriatric Medicine, becoming Head of the Department in 1993 until 1999, Chief of Service of the Medicine and Geriatric Unit at Shatin Hospital from 1993-2012, and Chair Professor of Medicine in 1994. From 2000-2006 she was Head of the Department of Community and Family Medicine, and from 2001-2005 Director of the newly established School of Public Health.

Her research interests include chronic diseases affecting elderly people, health services research, nutrition epidemiology, quality of life issues at the end of life. Prof Woo has well over 900 articles in peer-reviewed indexed journals.

Professor Paulin Straughan is a Professor of Sociology (Practice) at the School of Social Sciences and the Dean of Students at the Singapore Management University. She is also the Director of the Centre for Research on Successful Aging (ROSA). She received the Bachelor of Arts from the National University of Singapore in 1985, the Masters of Arts (1988) and PhD (1991) from University of Virginia, USA. Her research activities focus largely on Sociology of health; well-being and Ageing, and work and Family. She is Principal Investigator (PI) of four projects which have been awarded more than S$10 million by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Social Affairs (MSF) and AI Singapore, from 2018-2022. She was a Nominated Member of Parliament from 2009 to 2011, during which she argued for work-life balance and the nurture of a more pro-family social environment.

Dr. Dunyaporn Trachootham obtained her DDS (Dentistry) from Mahidol University, Thailand, and her Ph.D. (Biomedical Sciences: pharmacology) from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, USA, and a graduate certificate (Nutritional Sciences for Health Professionals) from Tufts University, USA. She is an associate professor and the Chair of the Academic and Research Cluster in Food and Nutrition at the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU). She lectures on research methodology, toxicology and nutrition, oral health and nutrition for the elderly, and the regulation of functional and medical food. Her research interests include the research and development of functional food for health benefits (safety and efficacy aspects), with over 8,799 citations for her research publication. She provides academic services to the Thai Food and Drug Administration as an assessor for novel foods, genetically modified plants, cultured meat, and the expert committee on dietary supplements, foods for special purposes, health claims, the positive list, and guidelines for texture-modified diets. She received the Malaspina Scholar Award from the ILSI Foundation, USA, the Distinguished Teacher Award from Mahidol University, and the Ajinomoto Outstanding Scientist Award from the Nutrition Association of Thailand under royal patronage.

Gladys Wong is a NZ Registered Dietitian and Accredited Dietitian of Singapore Nutrition & Dietetics Association. She trained and worked as a dietitian in NZ before relocating to Singapore in 1995 to pioneer the nutrition diploma at Temasek Polytechnic. She then returned to clinical/ foodservice dietetics in 2000 at Alexandra Hospital as Chief Dietitian of Nutrition & Dietetics, migrating to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in 2000.

Gladys has been instrumental in initiating local hospital-based practicum placements for Singaporean students pursuing dietetics degree with overseas universities. She also spearheaded Health Promoting and Green initiatives in both hospitals. Gladys relinquished her 18-year headship at end of 2018. Her current portfolio include overseeing dietetic placement education and involved in projects pertaining to health promotion, sustainability, 3D food printing and diabetes remission.

Gladys has served as office bearers with Singapore Nutrition & Dietetics Association (SNDA) and Diabetic Society of Singapore for numerous terms since 1996. She was Chair of Dietetics Panel with Ministry of Health, member of Allied Health Credentials Evaluation Panel for Dietetics and the completed National Diabetes Prevention & Care Taskforce. She is currently Chair of Membership Subcomm of SNDA. She is also an affiliated member of Foodservice Consultants Society International, and Singapore representative on the Regional Coordinating Council with Global Green & Healthy Hospital, a project of Healthcare without Harm.

Yen Ling Low, PhD, is the senior director of international nutrition science, global research and innovation for Abbott's nutrition business. Yen Ling has more than 20 years of experience in the field of food and nutrition, spanning government, academic, and industry settings. Food allergies affect millions of individuals and pose significant challenges to food safety management worldwide, including the Asia Pacific region. This trend has led to heightened concerns among consumers, healthcare professionals, and food manufacturers, emphasizing the need for more stringent regulations and improved allergen control measures. To address these concerns, regulatory agencies are continuously updating food allergen policies based on the latest scientific evidence.

Hosted by the Asian Life Sciences Institutes Network (ALSIN), comprising of ILSI Asia entities and Shanghai JS Life Sciences Institute, and co-organized with ILSI Global, this conference provided a platform for scientists, experts, industry professionals, policymakers, researchers, and healthcare practitioners to explore the latest scientific advancements, challenges, regulatory updates, and risk assessment approaches in food allergy prevention and management. Participants were able to engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and develop strategies to address current and emerging allergen-related challenges.

As part of the ongoing regional initiatives to strengthen science-based food safety in Southeast Asia, this workshop, co-organized by International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF) and South-East Asia Food and Agricultural Science and Technology (SEAFAST), IPB University, Indonesia, featured global and regional food safety experts who reviewed key issues in food safety and the application of MRA in science-based food safety management. It highlighted the latest developments in MRA science alongside the practical aspects for implementing risk-based food safety practices, assisting public health officials involved in food safety, as well as food suppliers in all aspects of the food supply chain.
