Seminar and Workshop on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition

Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
13/11/2018 – 14/11/2018

THEME

Maternal Nutrition and Birth Outcomes in Southeast Asia

BACKGROUND

Despite mounting international and national efforts to combat low birth weight and stunting in recent years, these two issues remain a persistent problem in Southeast Asia. Health consequences including poor cognitive development, greater risk of degenerative diseases and more notably, its cyclical nature, if not addressed effectively, could perpetuate a vicious cycle on the future generations and undermine economic productivity and development.

On the other hand, little attention was paid to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Southeast Asia despite emerging evidence highlighting its prevalence as a global health concern. If left untreated or poorly managed, this can lead to higher risk of Type 2 diabetes mellitus and long-term consequences in both mother and offspring.

This 2-full day seminar and workshop will provide a greater understanding of the underlying issues relating to the persistence of low birth weight and stunting and the GDM situation among women. The workshop will also provide all participants with the opportunity to share experiences, challenges faced and discuss strategies in addressing these problems.
